This is the year 2070. I have just turned 50, but I my appearance is of somebody of 85. I suffer from serious kidney problems, because I do not drink enough water. I’m afraid I do not have much time left to live. I am one of the oldest people in this society.

I remember when I was a child of 5. Everything was very different then. There were lots of trees in the parks, houses with beautiful gardens, and I could enjoy having a shower for half an hour. Nowadays we use towels with mineral oil to clean our skin. Before, women had beautiful hair. Now, we have to shave our heads to keep them clean without the use of water. Then, my father washed his car with water coming out of a hosepipe. Now, my son does not believe that water could be wasted that way.

I remember there were SAVE WATER warnings on outside posters, radio and TV, but nobody paid attention. We thought that water was to last forever. Now, all the rivers, lakes, dams and underground water beds are either dry or contaminated. Industry came virtually to a standstill and unemployment reached dramatic proportions. Desalination plants are the main source of employment and workers receive part of their salary in drinkable water. Assaults at gun point on the streets for a jerrycan of water are very common. Food is 80% synthetic.

Before, the recommended quantity of water to drink for an adult was 8 glasses a day. Nowadays, I am only allowed half a glass. We now have to wear disposable clothing, and this increases the amount of litter. We are using now septic tanks, because the sewerage system does not work for lack of water. The outside appearance of the population is horrible: wrinkled, emaciated bodies, due to dehydration, full of sores caused by ultra violet radiation, now stronger without the protective shield of the ozone layer. Skin cancer, gastrointestinal infections and of the urinary tracts are the main causes of death. Due to the excessive drying of the skin young people of 20 look like 40. Scientists investigate, but there’s no solution to the problem. Water cannot be produced, oxygen is also degraded due to the lack of trees and vegetation, and the intellectual capacity of the new generations is severely impaired. The morphology of spermatozoa in many men has changed. As a consequence, babies are born with deficiencies, mutations and physical deformities. Government makes us pay for the air we breathe, 137 m3 per day per adult person. People who cannot pay are expelled from the “ventilated zones”, with huge mechanical lungs driven by solar power. The air is not of good quality, but at least people can breathe. The average life expectancy is 35 years. In some countries, where there are still some green zones crossed by rivers, these are guarded by heavy armed soldiers. Water became a very coveted treasure, more precious than gold and diamonds. Where I live, there are no trees, because it seldom rains. When it happens to register some precipitation, it is of acid rain. The seasons have been severely affected by the atomic tests and by contamination from the 20th century polluting industries. We were warned to look after the environment, but nobody cared.

When my son asks me to talk about my youth, I tell him about the green fields, the beauty of the flowers, the rain, how pleasant was to swim and fish in the rivers and dams, to drink all the water we could, and how healthy people was. He asks: Daddy! Why there is no water? Then, I feel a lump in my throat! I cannot help feeling guilty, because I belong to the generation who contributed to the destruction of the environment or simply did not take into account all the warning signs. Now our children pay a very high price!

I sincerely believe that within a short time life on earth will not be possible, as the destruction of nature reached now an irreversible stage. How I would like to go back and make mankind understand that we still had time to save our Planet Earth.

Swine Flu – Precautions

As we all know that SWINE FLU is wide spread contagious disease. My friends, we all need to take extra precautions about the same. There is a preventive medicine available in HOMOEPATHY.

This is available in all HOMOEO shops. Take 1 dram of pills. It costs RS 12 to 15. It seems some of the shops are charging up to Rs. 20. The medicine is cheap and very effective. 1 dram bottle can be used for 5 members.

Gemstones – Price Per Carat

Most gemstones are priced according to weight. The exceptions are some carvings and cabochons, which may be sold by the piece rather than by the carat, since the work required to produce them exceeds the cost of the material. But for the vast majority of gemstones, the price is computed on a per carat basis. One gemstone carat is 200 mg, so there are 5 carats in 1 gram. Don’t confuse carat, a measure of weight, with karat, a measure of gold purity.

The price per carat of different gemstones can vary enormously, literally from $1 a carat to tens of thousands. Many factors influence the price per carat. Here is a brief summary of the factors that determine gem prices:

1. Gem Variety

Some rare gemstone varieties — such as sapphire, ruby, emerald, tsavorite garnet, tanzanite, spinel and alexandrite — command a premium price in the market. Other varieties, such as many types of quartz, are abundant in many locations around the world, and prices are much lower.

2. Color

In colored gemstones it is color that is the single most important factor in determining value. Ideal colors vary by gem variety of course, but generally the colors that are most highly regarded are intense, vivid and pure. Gems that are too light or too dark are usually less expensive than those of medium tone.

3. Clarity

A gemstone that is perfectly clean, with no visible inclusions, will be priced higher. In general, the cleaner the stone, the better it’s brilliance. However, inclusions that don’t interfere with the brilliance and sparkle of a gem will not affect its value significantly.

4. Cut and Polish

Gemstones should be cut with proper proportions to maximize the light that is returned to the eye. But gem cutters or often have to make compromises when cutting a particular stone. If the gem color is quite light, cutting a deeper stone will provide a richer color. Conversely, a dark tone can be lightened by making a shallower cut. But in every case, the facets should meet cleanly and the surface should be well polished with no scratches.

5. Size

For some gemstone varieties, such as quartz, the price per carat is fairly constant as the weight of the stone increases. But in the case of many rarer gems, price increases in a non-linear way as the weight increases. Not only are larger stones much more expensive, but gems cut in stock sizes — what are known in the trade as calibrated sizes — also tend to be more expensive. This is because more material has to be removed to achieve the calibrated size.

6. Shape

Some shapes tend to be priced higher than others, in part because of demand and in part because of material issues in cutting the specific shape. In general, round gems tend to command a premium in the market. Rounds are much less common than ovals, since ovals are usually cut to preserve as much weight of the raw material as possible. Cutting a round gem normally requires a greater loss of the rough stone, and for very expensive materials like sapphire, ruby, alexandrite and others, this can have a significant effect on price.

It is always come to know to our knowledge general people only remember few names of gemstones. For instance Diamond, Ruby, Sapphire, Emerald and pearl. But recent time shows that customers are becoming more aware of gemstone names and they now remember almost all birthstone gemstone names like Amethyst, Topaz, Garnet, Iolite and many more.

But when you go to actual gemstone store you see many gemstones. Some time seller also not sure what it is and what it called. Even if he tells customer the exact name and customer think it is anew name to him then he might not purchase that item.

Gemstones with difficult or confusing or obscure names are a hard sell to most of the average customer. Gemstones are in the odd position of having one name from the technical world of mineralogy and one name of the commercial world or Trade World of jewelry. The name that works in one world rarely works in the other. Sometimes the problem is solved by having 2 names, such as red corundum and ruby.

But it is not the one problem. the other thing is many people sell any stone in any other name and slowly it is popular in that name and people buy that stone by thinking that they are buying original stone but that are either buying a synthetic stone or some other similar looking stone substitute. The best is to ask your local jewelry fro that. Buying a expensive gemstone needed to be certified by gem testing lab so you know it is accurate trade and mineral name.

For instance we take example of Tanzanite:- It’s a rare event when a gemstone is renamed for marketing reasons, as happened when Blue Zoisite was renamed to tanzanite by Tiffany & Co. ORIGIN OF THE NAME: This gemstone was first named as ‘Dumortierite’ by the Goan tailor who discovered it. But Tiffani & Co., the company renowned for dealing with gemstones, named it after the name of the place of origin of the gemstone. That is why it is now called Tanzanite as it was discovered in Tanzania.

Second Example is An Arizona Ruby? That was once a well known name for pyrope garnet. Chalcedony – It is also known as Calcedony. Chrysolite – It is an additional name for peridot gemstone. Heliotrope – It is the additional name given to the gem known as ‘ Bloodstone’. Hematite . Micaceous hematite, Red ochre or ruddle, Kidney ore and Pencil ore are few names

Iolite:- ichroite and Cordierite are the additional names. Jacinth – It is name given to Zircon semi precious gemstone that is green in colour. Jade the trade names Australian jade, Red jade and Indian jade while Jasper is named as Jasper jade, Oregon jade and Swiss jade. Jasper – Ribbon jasper, Orbicular jasper, Landscape jasper, Picture jasper and Zebra jasper are the misleading terms used in jewelry business. Kunzite – The trade names for this gem are Rose kunzite and pink sapphire. Lapis Lazuli :-Nevada lapis, Faience lapis, Italian lapis, Copper lapis and Canadian lapis. Malachite- The trade names for this gem are Emerald malachite, Blue malachite, Copper malachite and Siliceous malachite. Morganite:- Pink Beryl and Aka Morganite are the fancy names of Morganite gemstone. Spinel – The common trade names used for spinel are Balas rubies, Cobalt spinel, Pleonast, Rubicelle, Arizona spinel, Sapphire spinel and Kandy spinel.

The Internet

The Internet is the fastest-growing tool of communication ever. It took radio broadcasters 38 years to reach an audience of 50 million, television 13 years, and the Internet just 4 years.
The Worldwide Internet Population is estimated at 1.08 billion. In 2000 there were 400 million users, and in 1995 20 million users.
In 2001 more information could be sent over a single cable in a second than in 1997 was sent over the entire Internet in a month.
The cost of transmitting information has fallen dramatically. A trillion bits of information from Boston to Los Angeles from $150,000 in 1970 to 12 cents today. E-mailing a 40-page document from Chile to Kenya costs less than 10 cents, faxing it about $10, sending it by courier $50.
The average total cost of using a local dialup Internet account for 20 hours a month in Africa is about USD 60 a month and USD 22 a month in the US. The average African monthly salary is less than USD 60.
Native English speakers represent 35% of the online population, although they are less than 10% of the world population. Native Chinese speakers represent the second largest group: 16% of the online population.
In Chile 89% of internet users have had tertiary education, in Sri Lanka 65%, and in China 70%.
Iceland has the highest percentage of internet users (68%); the United States stands at 56%; Malaysia 34%; Jordan 8%; Palestine 4%; Nigeria 0.6%; Tajikistan 0.1%

The Gender Divide

The typical Internet user worldwide is young, male and wealthy – a member of an elite minority.
A gender gap exists in access and usage of information and communication technologies. Women represent 42% of Internet users in the world. 37% in Italy and Germany.
The gap is narrowing in certain countries: Brazil 47%, Thailand 49%, United States and Canada 51%.

Muslim-Majority Countries

Only 4% of Arab women use the Internet. Moroccan women represent almost a third of that figure.
There are 16 million internet users in the Middle East. The internet population in the Middle East grew by 390% between 2000 and 2005. The United Arab Emirates and Bahrain have the highest percentage of Internet users, at 30% and 18.5% respectively, while Internet penetration in Yemen remains below 0.5% of the population.
In Palestine, 31.5% of women and 39.8% of men use computers. 23.7% of women and 40.7% of men use the Internet.
There is only one telephone for every 10 Arab citizens, while in developed countries the ratio is 1/1.7 persons.
There are less than 18 computers per 1,000 persons in the Arab world, compared to the global average of 78.3.
El Ghazala, Tunisia was identified as one of the 46 global technology hubs for innovation and achievement. 13 of the hubs identified are in the United States.
Two thirds of Jordanian SMEs (small and medium enterprises) use the Internet; 78% of them utilize computers, and 66% go online; just over a quarter have a webpage.
Oman has 267 thousand fixed line subscribers for 997 thousand mobile subscribers and 48 thousand internet subscribers.
Egypt has the same number of fixed and mobile subscribers (9.7 million).
Afghanistan has a combined telephone penetration of 3.4%.

The Digital Divide

At the end of the 20th century, 90% of data on Africa was stored in Europe and the United States.
With only 18% of the world population, OECD countries contain nonetheless 79% of the world’s internet users.
The United States, with a population close to the population of the Middle East, has 199 million Internet users while the Middle East has only 16 million.
34% of internet users are in developing countries. 81% of the world population is in developing countries.
The density of fixed telephone lines and mobile telephone lines is 5 times more in developed countries than in developing countries. PC ownership is 11 times more, and internet usage 8 times more. [developed=western Europe, Australia, Canada, japan, new Zealand, the US; everyone else in developing]
Of the estimated 5-8 million internet users in Africa, only about 2 million users are outside of North and South Africa. This implies about 1 user for every 250 to 400 people. This compares to the world average of 1 for every 15 people and a North and European average of 1 user for every 2 persons.
Within the Global South, opportunities are also unevenly distributed. In the Dominican Republic, 80% of internet users are in the capital. In China, the two cities of Shanghai and Beijing contain as many internet users as the 15 least connected provinces of 600 million people combined. In India, home to a major global hub of innovation, only 0.4% of people use the Internet.
Of the approximately 816 million people in Africa in 2001, it is estimated that:
- 1 in 4 have a radio
- 1 in 13 have a TV
- 1 in 35 have a mobile phone
- 1 in 40 have a fixed line phone
- 1 in 130 have a PC
- 1 in 60 use the Internet

Telephones

One third of the world population has never made a telephone call.
While Sub-Saharan Africa contains about 10% of the world’s population, it accounts for only 0.2% of the world’s 1 billion telephone lines.
The cost of renting a telephone connection on the African continent averages about 20 percent of GDP per capita compared to a world average of 9 percent and an average of only 1 percent in high-income countries.
There are under 5 telephones per 100 people in India.
In the world, there are over 1.2 billion fixed telephone lines, 1.3 billion cellular subscribers and 140 billion international telephone traffic minutes each year.

Mobile Telephones

As of 2002, mobile subscribers worldwide have outnumbered fixed-line subscribers. The mobile cross-over has taken place across geographic criteria, across socio-demographic criteria such as gender, income, or age, and across economic criteria.
Brazil has the same number of cellular phone subscribers as the whole of Africa combined. Asia, with 450 million subscribers, has twice the number of subscribers as the Americas combined. There are 836.5 million mobile subscribers in OECD countries.
While the United States has 199 million cell phone subscribers, it is not part of the top ten countries with the highest percentage of mobile subscribers. 55% of the US population are mobile subscribers.
Africa holds only 3% of the world’s mobile subscribers, yet Africa is the first place where mobile subscribers outnumbered fixed-line subscribers. In five years (1997-2002), the number of cell phone subscribers in Africa grew by 1600%.
Nicaragua has more than 3 times more mobile phone subscribers than fixed land lines (739 thousand compared with 214 thousand).
The number of mobile subscriptions per 100 people in a given country range from 120 in Luxembourg, to .44 in Malaysia, 24 in Jordan, 13 in Palestine, 3 in Nigeria et 0.7 in Tajikistan.

Patents

OECD countries, with 14% of the world’s people, accounted for 86% of the patent applications filed in 1998 and 85% of the scientific and technical journal articles published worldwide.
Firms in developed countries currently account for 96% of royalties from patents, or $71 billion a year.

The Computing Sector

In the UK, women constitute only about 20% of computer science classes (AGCAS 2003). In the US, the percentage of female computer science bachelors has decreased by 28% between 1983 and 1998 (Gurer and Camp 2002). Similarly in the computer science industry, the average female presence hovers around 20% (DfES 2001, AAUW 2000).
The computing industry exhibits vertical segregation (certain occupations for women, others for men) as well as horizontal segregation (women clustered in lower echelon occupations); in 1991 only 10% of the members of the British Computing Society were women. In 2000 9% of US IT engineers were women. On the other hand, 80% of data entry personnel was female. (Ahuja 2002; Webster 1996; Taggart & O’Gara 2000)

eWaste

220 million tons of old computers and other technological hardware are trashed in the United States each year.
Only 11% of PCs are recycled; the percentage for televisions and mainframes recycled is lower.
The United States generates more e-waste than any other nation .
An estimated 50-80% of e-waste collected in the United States for recycling is exported to areas such as China, India or Pakistan. Unusable equipment is also being donated or sold to developing nations as a way to avoid recycling costs.
